Aleister Crowley

“The Beast 666”

Human blood and ash painting

I had the opportunity to work with some ashes obtained from the Bolskeine House which partially burned in December of 2015. Once an estate of the self proclaimed prophet of Thelema, the building has become just as infamous as the occultist himself, hosting black magick ritual and coveting disturbing secrets (most rather twisted rumors).

Crowley was a particular fascination of mine from childhood, given the title “The Beast” by his own mother and continually banned from each country of residence, Crowley was a disturbed “revolutionist” in one of the most obscure sects of practice and religion of all time. Garnering a reputation of horrors, Crowley has influenced many occult works and characters seen in Hollywood to this day.

Included in this painting is a copy of the original certificate of authenticity accompanying the chard remains.

For this particular painting I chose a portrait of Crowley that did not invoke his classic imagery of unease, but rather one that portrayed him in his older years. The serenity of this picture mixed with the blood and ash, to me, felt more unnerving than his usual wide-eyed thousand yard stare…

(10ml of blood were used and the burnt remains were used in the background and heavily in his suit coat)
